Visualizing and managing CO2 emissions, including those from overseas locations, to commit to targets – A global leading electronics manufacturer's NET-ZERO action.

Alps Alpine, which introduced "booost Sustainability (booost GX)" in January 2023, is an electronics manufacturer of electronic components such as sensors, switches, and data communication modules, as well as in-car equipment such as car navigation systems and car audio systems. Headquartered in Ota-ku, Tokyo, the company has development, production, and sales bases in Japan, the United States, Europe, ASEAN, South Korea, and China. We interviewed them about the challenges of visualizing CO2 emissions, including those from overseas bases, and their future prospects.

Could you tell us the background behind the introduction of "booost Sustainability (booost GX)"?

Our company has actively promoted sustainability, ESG management, and supply chain management, including endorsement of the recommendations of the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) and disclosure of information such as CDP's climate change scoring. Now, in order to further accelerate decarbonization throughout the company, we have introduced "booost Sustainability (booost GX)" with the aim of creating "visualization" that is easy for anyone to understand at a glance.

We had been using a different tool to visualize CO2 emissions. While it offered a high degree of flexibility, it also lacked a fixed set of specifications. Because of this high degree of flexibility, we had to actively continue developing additional features, which led us to consider a tool specifically for GHGs. Additionally, since data input and output were primarily handled using Excel, we also aimed to move away from Excel.

One external factor is the increasing demand for disclosure of carbon footprints for each product. However, there are no standardized rules for calculation methods, and there are limits to the resources available to address these individually. Rather than blindly trying to address them, we decided to focus first on properly organizing and establishing a system.

With so many calculation tools available, what was the deciding factor in choosing "booost Sustainability (booost GX)"?

When selecting a tool, we naturally conducted interviews with various companies. First, "booost GX" met our needs because it allows for the visualization and management of global locations. To accelerate decarbonization across the entire company, visualization and budget management, including overseas locations, are now absolutely essential. We want to use "booost GX" to quickly grasp past performance and real-time data by visualizing data at the desired level of detail, including overseas locations, and conducting budget management based on that data in an easy-to-understand manner using graphs, etc., and also because it supports multiple languages.

What ultimately sealed the deal for us was Booost's flexible and sincere response to our detailed requests, not only with standard features but also with customization to address any missing requirements, starting from the requirements definition stage. Only Booost could do this. They also accommodated our needs regarding offsetting through the purchase of non-fossil fuel certificates, and we decided to implement their solution based on this flexibility and future scalability.

Please tell us about your future plans.

Currently, we are requesting all locations to input their renewable energy targets.

In the most recent fiscal year, 2023, we plan to apply for SBTi membership and join RE100, making it crucial to commit our decarbonization plan to international initiatives. Furthermore, starting with our performance in fiscal year 2025, we plan to be subject to disclosure requirements under the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD). We are concerned about the time and effort required to collect the information necessary to meet the disclosure requirements. Compatibility is extremely important when using multiple systems, and we intend to reduce the effort involved in transcription and other such tasks. Moreover, we must not stop at collecting information for disclosure, but rather utilize the collected information to implement concrete improvements.

Trends toward decarbonization and industry-specific responses are still in the process of being established and are highly fluid. On the other hand, it is necessary to correctly disclose information to stakeholders while protecting confidential information, and even more flexible responses will be required in the future.

We expect Booost to work alongside us to accelerate the realization of NET-ZERO by optimizing and streamlining our operations through their products, and by providing support and advice on specific cost reduction measures.
