Started calculations for Askul private brand products using "booost Supplier," a supply chain CO2 emissions visualization tool

ASKUL Corporation (Headquarters: Koto-ku, Tokyo; President and CEO: Akira Yoshioka; hereinafter "ASKUL") and Booost Corporation (Headquarters: Shinagawa-ku, Tokyo; Representative Director: Hironori Aoi; hereinafter "Booost") will begin a full-scale initiative in August to reduce Scope 3 (*1) emissions using a CO2 emission calculation tool, with the aim of reducing CO2 emissions across the entire supply chain of ASKUL's e-commerce business, ahead of the industry.

At Askul, 99% of CO2 emissions are Scope 3, and of those, purchased goods account for the majority at 75%. Therefore, we have decided to focus on the CO2 emissions of products and begin by calculating the CO2 emissions of private-label (PB) products handled by Askul. By making the CO2 emissions of products visible, Askul and its suppliers will be able to consider concrete measures to reduce the CO2 emissions of each product, and customers will be able to select environmentally friendly products.

In this initiative, in order to efficiently and accurately calculate CO2 emissions, we will use the supply chain CO2 emission visualization tool provided by Boost.booost SupplierWe will implement this system and utilize the data collected from our suppliers.

(*1) Supply chain emissions other than Scope 1 and Scope 2

■Background of the initiative

In recent years, with the increasing frequency of torrential rains and heat waves, climate change has become a serious issue, and companies are being asked to take measures to reduce CO2 emissions. In 2016, Askul declared its "2030 CO2 Zero Challenge" and is promoting concrete initiatives to achieve decarbonization throughout the entire supply chain, from raw material procurement to product delivery to customers. In October 2022, Askul established the "Askul Product Environmental Standards" and began to score the environmental consideration level of each product and displaying it on the product page. In February of the following year, in addition to the environmental score, a visual display using leaf illustrations was added, evolving the sales floor to make it easier to check the degree of environmental consideration of products and compare products.

To further reduce CO2 emissions across the entire Askul supply chain, we are now beginning to calculate CO2 emissions for each product in earnest. 99% of Askul's CO2 emissions are Scope 3, with 75% of those coming from purchased goods. Therefore, we will focus on reducing CO2 emissions from products, which make up the majority of our emissions, and begin with private label (PB) products handled by Askul. By making product CO2 emissions visible, Askul and its suppliers will be able to consider concrete ways to reduce CO2 emissions for each product, and it will also support customers in selecting environmentally friendly products and comparing similar products from an environmental perspective.

■Introducing visualization tools and beginning calculations to reduce CO2 emissions

When calculating the CO2 emissions of products, Askul faced challenges such as the complexity of requesting responses from suppliers, collecting data, and verifying information, while suppliers faced challenges related to the effort and cost involved in calculations. Therefore, they decided to implement "booost Supplier," a supply chain CO2 visualization tool provided by Booost. "booost Supplier" assigns an account to each supplier, and by registering the amount of activity for the materials and processing (manufacturing) that make up the products delivered to Askul, and selecting the emission intensity, the CO2 emissions for each product can be calculated. Not only can detailed data be collected from each stage of the supply chain, but the process of requesting responses from suppliers, inputting responses, verification, and analysis is also made easier, allowing for efficient calculation of CO2 emissions. The data collected from suppliers can be viewed as the total CO2 emissions of the entire supplier on booost GX, leading to improvements toward reducing CO2 emissions.

Going forward, we will begin inputting data into the "booost Supplier" implementation briefing tool for 10 pilot suppliers starting in September 2023. We plan to gradually expand this to other suppliers as well.

■ About "booost Paradise"

 「booost Supplier"Booost" is a supplier CO2 emission visualization tool provided by Booost. It is one of the applications of "booost Sustainability," a platform that supports the acceleration of sustainability management, and is a supply chain management tool aimed at achieving Scope 3 reductions. It enables the management of CO2 emissions from a wide range of suppliers and contributes to the efficient management of progress towards CO2 reduction efforts across the entire supply chain.

<Four main features>

  1. Assigning accounts and screens to all suppliers, calculating costs, and integrating them.
  2. Improving the proportion of precise primary data from the supplier side (cumulative data)
  3. Streamlining the process of requesting and confirming data from suppliers
  4. Centralize supplier emissions data

ASKUL and Booost will work together to reduce CO2 emissions throughout the entire supply chain and contribute to the realization of a sustainable society.
